Christmas Lights Lose their “Vibe”

Why do Christmas Lights look “Different” after Christmas?

Welcome to episode eight of the all about Quincy podcast. It’s been a few months since my last episode and, you know, the holidays and everything. They had a lot going on. What is it about Christmas lights the day after Christmas, they just have this totally different vibe. And I know we’re well past Christmas now, but people are still lighting their Christmas lights and their windows. And I think it’s nice because there’s a lot of dark and gloomy news going on.

Speaker 1: And aside from all of the dark and gloomy weather we have here in the wintertime. So I, I like, I like seeing the lights. I think they add a certain brightness and spark, but they have a totally different energy to them. If you will, then the lead up to Christmas, do you feel that way There’s just, it’s kind of like, you know, the Christmas tree has a different vibe to it on Christmas morning versus Christmas Eve. I don’t know if I’m the only one that feels that way. but yeah, the holidays we’re here as you know,

We Said Goodbye to Zoe

I’m a big fan of dogs. we unfortunately had to say goodbye to Zoe in early November. Zoe was 14 years, eight months old and she just got tired and we had to say goodbye. And it’s been very, very hard, to say goodbye to Zoe.

Speaker 1: we miss her every day, but we have, Quinn’s still Quinn missed Zoe for quite a while. and if you ever have a pet that, ha you’ve had to say goodbye to, you know, that if you have other pets along with them, that you, that they miss them and Quinn, turned one year old the day after we said goodbye to Zoe, which was ironically sad. But, also, you know, we had, we were excited for Quinn as well. So I actually created a tribute video for Zoe with some videos and pictures that I had taken over the time that we had Zoe. Some folks may realize that we adopted, Zoe from my brother and sister-in-law and his family because unfortunately my nephew was allergic to her. So you’ll the video has pictures of Zoe from when she was a puppy all the way up until her very last couple of days.

She touched so many lives and filled so many lives with love that I just had that project within me too. and this is how I express myself through a production. And then we had the holidays and everything like that. So it’s been a bit since we’ve done an episode and I’m excited about today’s episode because this is, this is, a local business, very local, and some folks that I have met during my walks with Zoe and Quinn, they have a dog too named Lucy, and I’m talking about Juliana and Tyler Oates.

Speaker 1: And, we were talking in the park and, you know, you just strike up conversations with your neighbors and you say, find out what they do and all of that. And I found out they are a local candle making company and they make nontoxic candles. And I said, Hey, I need to get you on the podcast. So that’s what we did. after the holidays, after they went through their Christmas rush and their Christmas break and got out all of their candles and everything like that, this is a fascinating interview because as you’ll hear in my conversation with them, there’s a lot more to it in making a candle and developing the scent of a candle and all the different aspects of a candle and why you want to have a non-toxic candle in your home. So let’s not delay this anymore. Let’s get right to my conversation with Juliana and Tyler Oates. I think you’re going to love it.

Speaker 1: Welcome back. As I said, at the beginning of the episode, my guests today are Juliana and Tyler Oates, founders of Oates Home Co. and they make non-toxic candles folks. How are you doing great to be here Thanks for having us. Thank you for being on that all about Quincy podcast. I should tell our listeners how we met and that was through walking our dogs in the neighborhood during this what seems to be a never-ending path, with your dog, Lucy and my dogs, Zoe and Quinn. And now unfortunately just Quinn, but, yeah. So see each other in the neighborhood passing. And then we just had some conversation, I think maybe it was after Thanksgiving. And we were like, well, what do you do What do you do And so here we are. And tell us about your background, how you started making these non-toxic candles and why.

Speaker 2: Yeah, it kind of started because of me. So I’ve always had breathing issues my whole life. My parents are really good and Tommy a lot about how the things in my, in our home and my body can affect how we breathe and affects the air quality that we have. That’s always been something that I’ve struggled with throughout my life is trying to create better air quality inside my home so that I can breathe. Except when you’re in COVID I think the world has gotten a little more aware of that, right We’re really careful about how we breathe. Now. Everyone’s concerned about that. So couples came out of our own need. I was really particular about the things that we brought into our home specifically for candles, and Tyler’s always loved them. Every time we found a new set that he liked, that I was like, Nope, not made with good ingredients. I’m not bringing that in finding candles that we, the sense that we wanted and then made with clean ingredients made with pure story wax oils, where the company are willing to disclose the types of oils, what was in the oils, how they were made. So we’ve been just kind of out of our own. We’ve gotten a really particular in a good way to, we know exactly where the wicks come from, what kind of cotton it is, what the cotton is treated with 10, make the Wicks and the candle like we’ve gone deep. We know

Speaker 3: I think especially, in today’s day and age, everyone is concerned about what they’re breathing in. And so I think it is very important to consider, like we were saying earlier, what sort of products you bring into your home And I think with us, I mean, what we do is everything is handmade by us. So, and in small batches, so we know exactly what’s going into that. And so that’s why, again, we are very careful in what we source while we put in. It’s not a factory that this is coming out of, that something could have mixed in. I mean, this is all made right out of our kitchen. So

Speaker 1: Yeah. You know, it’s interesting. I looked at your, I’m sorry to cut you off there. Julianna, I’m looking at your website over here on my other monitor in our comfortable, but not overly ostentatious studios here. And there’s actually a, like a pre-roll video that you’ve got of the whole process, the clothes pins, very clever, but it works. Yeah. And, and I’ll let the listener go to, as it Oates home C o.com and they can see what we’re talking about. Yeah. Speaker 2: I think for the average consumer, there’s probably three things they can really easily look forward to help make sure they’re making better choices in their candles. I think it kind of boils down to the wax that, that a candle, the oils that are in the candle and then what the Wick is made from a little things like instead of choosing petroleum, like you mentioned earlier, petroleum is a, an oil by-product and actually breathing it in as, just as harmful as secondhand smoke. So it’s a big deal to bring in a petroleum or an paraffin wax candle.

Speaker 1: So parafin is

Speaker 2: Paraffin as the same petroleum they’re both made from the oil byproduct. So choosing something like soy wax or beeswax, or even coconut wax, they beat burned, clean lean, and they don’t give off the same kind of stuff that affects our lungs. So choosing a better wax can be really helpful for people looking for healthier choices, choosing camels that will say things like Falaise free, which is a kind of disrupts our endocrine system or our hormone system in our body choosing roles are companies that specifically say we don’t include these things. You know, if somebody doesn’t say they don’t, they probably do. So just reading those labels carefully, it was always a good way to make sure you’re choosing a better product.

Speaker 1: Obviously you are interested in having your own candles for your own home. Sure. The air quality. How did this turn into a business

Speaker 3: For us Again, I’m the candle guy. So anytime we went to the store, I usually found my way into the candle section there. And, always enjoyed looking. I always like having it kind of just changes the atmosphere in your home. And especially when you have guests over just having a nice smelling home, but in terms of it becoming a business, you know, Juliana does a lot of crafting stuff on her on and, and you know, doing different things. And so we were like, well, you know, we, she used to make soaps and she makes earrings and she does all these different things. And so I was like, why don’t we make our own candles And then also just both of us working in, in, you know, corporate world and, and in business, we were like, well, if we’re making these for ourselves, we might as well make these available to others and turn that into a business. So that’s kind of how it

Speaker 1: Take the skill set that you’re using in your other work and applying it to your own benefit. I think that’s cool. The candle section, Tyler. I gotta, I gotta say that for me. What, like, if you remember walking in a mall and I won’t say the name of the right, you walk by and you go, oh my God, I’ve got a headache, all that smell green. Am I alone in that for me I suppose. It’s like, you know, I know that Disney, when you go to a Disney park and you smell popcorn, it’s because the popcorn kiosks, they have blowers and they’re blowing that smell out around them. And I’m wondering if the candle shops do the same thing, because for me it was just like, oh, I’m never, I can’t go in there. It’s just overpowering. And I’m 30 yards away.

Speaker 2: We feel the same way. We don’t even know. We don’t. I always avoid the Kendall iron stores because it does give me a headache. I feel like I always have said, you can like taste the chemicals in the air from bad produce candles. So we avoid those ones and natural candles shouldn’t have that same kind of intensity to it. Cause that’s not trying to change the particles in your air to cover them up with smells. It’s actually just giving little hints of it. It shouldn’t be replacing what’s in your air with Babson. It should just be adding a secondary sentence. So hopefully natural ones shouldn’t be as intense. A lot of that’s depending on your sensitivity.

Speaker 1: Right. And I think just like the, I’ll use a word juxtaposition of all those aromas can create a cacophony fusion in your brain

Speaker 2: And you walk past that in the mall and you just get hit in the face with all smells. Yeah.

Speaker 1: So why is it that those scents are more, what’s the word I’m looking for in a natural candle Why are they more subtle, I suppose Is it because you use fewer or a less amount of the aroma or

Speaker 2: That’s a little bit we’ve perfected our correct percentages, trying to figure out exactly what but part of it is because of how it’s chemically made. There’s nothing in it that your body is negatively responding to because it’s not changing how your body interprets new sense, like your endocrine system, which is your present your hormone system. When it smells something that’s toxic to it, your body has a reverse reaction. Even if you like it to do a smell, it smells good. Your body goes, oh, oh no, this is too much. And it kind of makes you over-interpret it. Do you smell it a lot because your body’s trying to say this probably isn’t great for you for us when it’s the less toxic ingredient, not just for us, anything that’s less toxic is going to be different because we are losing a little bit less. We’re also using cleaner ingredients that your body knows how to process like an actual oil extracted from an actual fruit or plant, but your body knows what to do.

Speaker 3: And it’s also part in part, we have our percentages, right But it’s also the education side of things is also knowing what size candle is appropriate for the space. You’re trying to, you know, fill scent with. So standard size candle is a seven and a half ounce candle. And that’s great for a standard room or, you know, either a bathroom, your bedroom, things like that. If you have a larger, more open living room, we also make 30 ounce candles, which is a three-week much larger candle. And because it has a larger surface area, it does have, what’s kind of going to the educational side. There’s something called a cold throw in a hot throw in candles gel.

Speaker 1: So I have deep here. We people want to know we’re not talking about blankets.

Speaker 3: So the cold throw is what you consider the smell when you smell a candle before it’s burned. And so if you just take off the cap and you smell it, that’s, what’s called a cold throw scent. That’s what you’re

Speaker 2: Smelling. When you walk past that unnamed store in the mall, right

Speaker 3: Okay. Not to be named. And then when you take a candle and you light it and when you can smell that candle, once you you’ve lit it and it burns in the room, that’s, what’s called a hot throw. And then there’s also a range to that hot bro. We can light a single candle in our living room, but I don’t always smell it when I’m up the stairs or maybe around the corner in the kitchen. But when I come back into this room, I can smell it. And so sometimes it’s also just finding the appropriate sized candle for that space. I know

Speaker 1: I’ve never put that together. I always thought the candle sizes were based on like the shelf size or the table size that you had available to put the candle on. Sure. Also makes perfect sense that no pun intended sense. and, yes, I play with words all day that this size of the candle would impact the range of the aroma creative from burning the candle. That is very cool. I looked at your website and I see that you make different candles. What is your most popular scent

Speaker 2: I think currently it’s one called Pamella Menta, which is a citrus mint kind of blend is grapefruit orange lemon, blood orange, a bunch of different citrus and mins. And now what I think is our current,

Speaker 3: And that was also one of the original candles we released when we first started, we originally started with what we call the which is three candles that you can also find in a bundle currently it’s Pamella Menta, we have Camelia. And then we also have Monaco three, very distinctly different smells, and sense. but I would say pomelo Menta has been definitely number one, since we’ve started, how

Speaker 1: Come up with the sense Do you just like play with different smells and say, Hey, I really liked that or, Ooh, it didn’t really well. What is your, you know, like pantry of half spent candles look like I mean, it was a lot of trial and error involved in creating these.

Speaker 3: Oh, absolutely. Yeah. And the funny thing is not that we have titles here, we both own it, but she definitely does a lot of the business oriented things, the running our website and knowing all that sort of thing. I feel like a lot of times I end up usually making more of the sense. I would say that one’s definitely more of a team effort and making sense, but a lot of the making part is what I like to do, but a lot of it is trial and error and we sit down and we’ll look over a hundred different sorts of sense that you try and put together. And then we just come up with combinations and it’s trial and error, and sometimes we make candles that smell great, but then we tweak it maybe five, six, maybe 20 times until we get it to the specific scent we’re going for. Sometimes we get it right on the first try. And sometimes we make candles that are so bad. We never want to try making that again.

Speaker 1: how do you know when it’s just right Do you do like, you know, taste test for candles or

Speaker 2: I do a burn test. So one for like for Pramila Menta, I knew I wanted a citrus mint. So one of my favorite combinations. So we started off looking at every, or we have already know what are different combinations we could have, what percentage should be lemon or grapefruit or orange. And then you make a slightly different one. That’s tweaked by 5% with a different percentage and assign that if different one that’s tweaked by 5% different. So like how I said, we could make 20 variations of one candle, they’re all a little bit different and we kind of keep them all. So at some point we’ll do a burn test. Well, we’ll have our little testers we’re making put in a room, come back in five minutes and smell it when you blow it out, do it the next one and try to figure out what it smells better. It’s a lot of note taking. And for us, a lot of thinking about how sensors so emotional, right What do I smell from this What notes am I getting How does it feel different It’s definitely hard though to choose just one because sometimes they all smell great. And sometimes they do not.

Speaker 1: What’s the worst one that you made.

Speaker 3: We

Speaker 2: Tried like a chest.

Speaker 3: Yeah. That one was bad. It was like a vanilla Chestnut that we were trying to do for the holidays. Both of us do not the vanilla, vanilla scent. So we usually don’t go for those sorts of things. Even though it’s a popular scent, we personally just don’t like that smell. There was another one we tried, I think it was like a brown sugar whiskey candle. And that one, it was just too sweet. And it just, they didn’t go

Speaker 2: Because we’re, we mix our own. So sometimes people who make candles, just buy an oil, use that one oil hole to make a candle for us, we’re mixing our own. So one candle could have 20 different oils in it that we’re mixing in millimeter percentages to get it to the center we want. So sometimes you have two great smells, but you put them together and they don’t react well together, but it does not make it smell as great in the end. So it’s a lot of tweaking and fine tuning.

Speaker 1: That’s amazing. So this could, I mean, could it take you literally months to come up with a new candle

Speaker 3: And even, and another part of the educational of the process, I guess, is, when we make a candle, it’s not like we make it wait for it to solidify and we can burn it because we’re using organic materials of soy wax and, and you know, non-toxic oils, there’s a cure. Time is what it’s called. Typically it takes at least 10 days for a candle to fully cure until we can burn it after we’ve made it. And that’s because of the materials we use. Now, if you use back, like we were saying, the sorts of companies that mass produce things, and they’re using a paraffin wax, those after they solidify, it takes about like an hour or two for a candle solidify. You can burn it immediately because that’s all those chemicals in that that are just solidifying it. And it’s good to go with us because it’s an organic material. They take time to bind together or cure, which takes about 10 days so we can make testers, but we can’t really test them until 10 days. So then we see those, smell them, what tweaks we want to make, make a new batch and wait another 10 days. So you can see how long of a process it may take till we finally get to the round. We like,

Speaker 2: Normally it takes us a few months, at least.

Speaker 1: Wow, that’s fascinating. But I think, I don’t know. I think there’s a renewed interest in craftsmanship. I could be wrong, but I, I think people are searching for something that’s authentic, I guess is the word that I’m looking for. I don’t know, maybe I’m wrong, but I’m sure. Sure. Not everybody is. I mean, cause Christmas tree shops and you know, ocean state job lot, you know, there’s plenty of market for that. My dad says this about the Christmas tree shop where the inconceivable is commonplace, like frog shaped toilet brush holder. But you know, we’re not doing that. That’s interesting. So you, you do this whole thing. You must have to take a lot of notes and tracking and spreadsheets.

Speaker 2: We got recipe spreadsheets. We have, you know, one kind of 1 cent could have 20 recipes with treat. Then we also have like the, do not ever use again, recipe spreadsheets.

Speaker 1: Well, yeah. I mean, cause if you didn’t know that you’d go, oh yeah. And then that would cost you money. Absolutely.

Speaker 3: Yeah. Material. And then the T absolutely. Right. Just to try and get the right. Interesting.

Speaker 1: I’ll share a little inside baseball, working at the radio station. You, you familiar with the band journey Yeah. Steve Perry, I had the opportunity to meet him at an event a few years ago, pre pandemic. And then everything gets referenced before or after all this stuff happened. At any rate he was talking about, he did a solo album, I think in 2018, he released it. And he was talking about how they were coming up with the track order and the order that they were going to put the songs on. And he said, I think it was number 62 B finally came up with the way we wanted to organize the songs. And it was like a 10 or 12 song CD. And I went to a friend of mine. Who’s also a music buff. And we were like, can you imagine they sat down

Speaker 1: Or he did with the people, he was co-producing that album and came up with at least 62 different versions of it. And, but I mean that, there’s a reason why he was in that band and became part of a band that became mega stars and in the rock and roll hall of fame and worldwide fans loved their music. I mean, there’s a reason why when you take the effort and your painstaking in your process that you come up with a product or service that people want. And it’s what people don’t know that goes into creating. Like if I hadn’t had this conversation with you, I figure, okay, they melt some soy wax, put a little peppermint oil and stir it up and wait for it to harden and, and put in a box. Yeah. But it’s so much more than that. Absolutely. So that’s, that’s the cool thing about my job is I get to talk to folks like you and learn all this stuff and hopefully share with people that are interested in learning more about candles and now you don’t just make candles. Speaker 3: Yeah. So we also make room sprays. And so we do have those in all of the scents that are on the site. Now, basically our main line sends, we currently have five main line sense that are always available, but we also do what we call reserve runs. So we’ll make a smaller batch of a new scent and we’ll release that set. And once they’re sold out, they’re gone. And so we started since this past fall, actually. So October, all right, October was the first time we released them and we put those out with some of the reserve runs as well. But as of now, those are the two sort of things you can find on our site. You never know. Yeah. We’re always thinking and dreaming and creating things to expand,

Speaker 1: But it’ll be months down the road or maybe not,

Speaker 3: Who knows that’s part of it.

Speaker 1: No, that’s good. I appreciate that. So what kind of a room sense do you folks create Yeah, so there sure. It’s not like Chile

Speaker 2: But our candles are in, so it’s all the same sense just in a different product. So it kind of, again, I’m a forgetful person. So after I left the house too many times with a candle burning in the living room, you know, said, sensory sounds great. So I can make the house smell nice and not burn anything down.

Speaker 3: And you know, most people don’t have candles burning in the cup holder of their car. So this is a great way to freshen up your car. If you want to do that.

Speaker 1: Yeah. Now I’m going to ask a question it’s kind of weird. Are they all like flowery sense or are they, you know, kind of like bourbon bacon kind of sense that they are, but you know what I’m saying, got a more masculine versus feminine sense. I guess I’ll just

Speaker 2: Nick’s of the main five. There’s the citrus mint from elemental. There’s one that is a plant of a white tea, which might not mean much unless you’re like a solid tea person. It’s very light too hairy. It smells to me feels just like a spa. Like I kind of found the script, clean, fresh scent. We have one called Monaco, which my, my sub kind of description is like a really rich guy who lives near the beach.

Speaker 3: That one’s a little more on the masculine side. However, that is also, I’ve had people call it the sleeper candle where they’re like, you know, I bought the bundle and I wasn’t expecting to like Monaco as much, but then it becomes their favorite. And it does have what some may call a masculine scent, but it’s nice. And we have,

Speaker 2: It’s just really fresh outside,

Speaker 3: Really clean outdoorsy smell.

Speaker 1: That sounds cool. Yeah.

Speaker 2: One of my favorites that’s, what’s on our car, it’s our car smell. And then last one we themed, it was a really named after actually Newport at the city Newport or the street themes. And it’s really Amber heavy. So was ever again a masculine sense,

Speaker 1: Amber heavy. What do you mean by that?

Speaker 2: Amber is a, an element like the mineral as well as a stone that has a very round smooth sentence often found like men’s colognes. It didn’t sound alcohols. Like a whiskey sentence can have an Amber undertone. it’s a weird sense to describe unless you know what it is. It’s a little sweet and round is how the scent world would

Speaker 1: Describe it.

Speaker 2: It’s you know, we have weird

Speaker 1: That’s okay. I mean, how do you describe a smell as either bad or why like that

Speaker 2: I bring someone, you can smell it and see if you smell the roundness.

Speaker 2: We’re mostly online. You can find us on Instagram and Facebook. we’ve been in a few different boutique stores around Rhode Island and Massachusetts. I think both of them are, I know at least one of them is currently not open to the public because the covenants all online. Sorry. No, I think most of our retailer partners are all kind of focusing on online trying to sell foot traffic with some of the changes lately, but you can always find them on our website for sure.

Speaker 1: And you’re right here in Quincy. How did you folks wind up in Quincy

Speaker 3: Yeah, I was going to say, so I actually grew up in Pennsylvania. She was like born in Georgia, raised in Florida, but had family in Newport. She lived all over, but we both attended college in Quincy. We went to a small school called Eastern Nazarene college and that’s where we met. And then when we got married, we stayed up here and as they say, the rest is history

Speaker 1: That’s the PA that’s the, that’s your top seller right now

Speaker 3: Yeah, probably our top seller. Yeah. So that’s Spanish for grapefruit mint, Pomella, Menta.

Speaker 1: Very cool. And, they can order online if they want to. Is there anything that you want to share before we say goodbye

Speaker 3: Yeah. I mean, we’re also pretty active on Instagram. A lot of times you can find educational resources there. A lot of times, a lot of the stuff we shared today is usually things that we like to highlight or feature on our Instagram page as reminders, how to maintain candle care. You know what to look for the education of what goes into candles, things like that. And a bunch of really nice photos.

Speaker 2: The rest is just helping me, helping people make better choices. That’s what it’s all about, right? We want to enjoy our life and like our candles that choose better things to help us live healthier, better lives.

Speaker 1: You know, one question I did want to ask is, so you use a soy-based wax. How do we know that that is safe and healthy

Speaker 2: So all waxes, the FDA has done a bunch of tests on waxes. I’ll have as have most universities at this point. So the wax that we use is certified organic, which helps us know how the wax was grown, how the soil specifically was grown. And so itself is a product that if you have a severe soy allergy, maybe you choose a different wax, but for most of the population, it’s the same. When soil is burned, it doesn’t produce the same level of sickness. There’s lots of research studies. We’re happy to link some, if anybody has any questions yet trust, happy to share the links to those. But when you do a burn test at like a chemistry lab, whatever it’s called, when you can literally see the released, if anyone, you can do a kind of a test at your own home, if you have a paraffin candle, as I used to have, once upon a time, I noticed that if I’d burn it somewhere, you know, maybe on a table next, not touching a wall, but near wall. When I moved it, I could literally see sweat on the wall. I could literally what was coming off of my candle.

Speaker 1: I figured that’s what happened. It

Speaker 2: Shouldn’t be. So that is a little bit normal, right Anything that’s burned, produces carbon. That’s how Adam work, but so racks, it’s not going to do that because the wax itself, isn’t creating soot. It’s just a natural soot, released from the pure cotton being burned, which that’s normal. But the story in the wick, right Soy, wax itself, doesn’t actually produce it.

Speaker 1: See, but that’s the thing. That’s what people don’t know. They just say, oh, look at these candles. They smell amazing. I want three, but they don’t have the backstory, but I always liked the backstory. So I want to thank you for sharing that story with me today. I appreciate that.

Speaker 2: We can talk about candles.

Speaker 1: Really. What’s one more thing that you want to share

Speaker 2: Once upon a time used as currency in the Roman empire, a few thousand years ago, it’s your light to tell you heat your food. It’s how you do everything. They were commonly traded good and could be used as currency with different countries trading. Cause they made out of different things. You could have made them out of whale tallow. If you lived up in Alaska and were, you know, a native person there and the things you make them out of from different places became kind of a trainable. Good. I want to see what other countries make their candles out of. So it became a trading option for country.

Speaker 1: It used to be made from like animals, hats and things like that. Where a lot of times Really Yeah. That’s yeah. You know that I have beehives and you do anything with bees wax in your candles.

Speaker 2: I’m dead before beeswax is actually the most sustainable option for wax. It’s very hard to get and it’s pretty expensive. And it’s a little bit harder to solidify because the wax molecules itself and these blocks are really tight. So it’s harder for the oil molecules to settle in and amongst them. so for us, we chose our wax because the price point readily available, it’s a cheap organic product and we wanted it to be made sure that was organic and grown in America. The wax were uses all grown here in America from American soybeans. But beeswax is a great option. Definitely something someday, nobody maybe we’ll get into other kinds of wax come or come looking for your bees.

Speaker 1: Now it was the cotton and the wicks grown in the U S too.

Speaker 2: It is. Yep. It’s organic cotton. There’s no lead. There’s no metal lining to the Wick. Sometimes that can be a concern. Wicks made in other countries might have a very thin, like a hair of led lining to help support it. But lead is obviously

Speaker 1: Poisonous to people

Speaker 2: In America. Candle wicks can’t have led, but wicks made in other countries shipped into America can. So our cotton wicks are made here in America. There’s no metal lining. There’s no lead and there’s no zinc in them. Like it’s a hundred percent only cotton braided into a wick.

Speaker 1: You know, I bet most folks listening would have no idea that there is possibly a little sliver of lead in the wick and their candles that they have in their homes. And we actually went on location to record this episode, October is national pizza month, and we interviewed Gerry He and his wife owned Gennaro’s eatery. Speaker 1: And so what I did was I reached out to everybody. I said, October’s national pizza month among other observances during the month of October. But I, I thought, you know, let’s talk about pizza because Quincy has a lot of pizza shops. So I reached out, I said, Hey, where do you folks like to get pizza I got all kinds of restaurants sent to me. So I reached out and a gentleman by the name of Gerry Martocchio who owns Gennaro’s he and his wife own Gennaro’s eatery. He said, I want to be on the show. So I went to his restaurant before they opened and we sat down and had a conversation about his history, how he is making it through the pandemic, the changes that they had to make during the shutdown and, all about the art and science of making delicious pizza. So let’s go listen to my conversation with Gerry chef owner of Gennaro’s eatery.

Speaker 2: Well, as I said, at the beginning of the show, my guest today is Gerry who is the owner of Gennaro’s he and his wife own Gennaro’s restaurant here in Quincy.

Speaker 3: Quincy AB and in the dining room aside, but it’s, Blanchard road as you’re pulling into the parking lot. Yeah. So it’s right on the corner

Speaker 2: Diagonally across from the Quincy credit union union location, Gerry October is national pizza month, right And as you recall, I reached out to pizza shops and pizza restaurants all around the city of Quincy. And I said, Hey, let’s talk about Quincy pizza. And at the beginning of the very first episode of the podcast, I said, I started the all about Quincy podcast because I was walking around during COVID and I saw all these shops and restaurants closed, and I come from a small family business background. Right. And I know that business owners, such as yourself, your money is tied up in your inventory. Be exactly be it, food supplies, napkins, all that kind of stuff. Right So your money’s tied up and unless it moves, the cashflow is not going right. Things shut down. That’s right. And that’s true for a lot of shop owners.

Speaker 2: And I just was walking around saying myself, my folks retired about 20, almost 20 years ago. Right. And I was thinking if COVID had happened back then, I don’t know what we would’ve done. And so I said, you know what I love queen Z’s history. It’s got a lot of businesses, a lot of great restaurants. And I said, what can I do Take my interest and knowledge of small family businesses and history and do something to support the businesses in Quincy. So that’s where this show started from. When I saw that October is national pizza month. I said, Hey, let’s, let’s, we’ve got plenty of pizza places. Let’s go to corner. So anyway, tell us the story of Gennaro’s, how you got started and how your wife got stuck.

Speaker 3: I started in Watertown and a small deli sub shop. And, I grew up in Belmont. Oh, you did Okay. Yeah, it was right off of Mount Albany street. But before that, you know, even growing up and I was 12, 13 years old, I’ve worked in bakeries and, you know, learn how to make bread among other stopping. And I just really took an interest. It was my purpose, you know what I mean, to get into it. So I worked in a lot of places, a lot of bakeries, a lot of restaurants, I went to college, you know, a couple of years, I learned the business end of it. And just been very lucky over the years, working with the right people. I worked with the old school chefs and I’m telling you, it’s nothing like it because schools are good, but schools are textbook. This is the real deal. You know, the art. Yeah. You know, when you work with a good chef that knows his stuff, boy, you follow him around, you know, and you learn. And that’s, that’s what I did. And I was in Watertown for a long time, then opened up a second place in Watertown. Gerry’s kitchen. And I was there for about eight or nine years off of Belmont street. And I was right on the corner. I think I remember that right near Francis food market. I

Speaker 2: Know exactly how to go pay your phone bill.

Speaker 3: Everybody told me that I would never do anything there because there was no packing. There was, it was right on the corner. Yeah. I says, okay. And I turned that into a lucrative business. Thank God. And then after that I got married and I bought a house down the south shore. I was commuting back and forth every day. And it was just killing me with the hours I was working. So we decided on Quincy as a landing spot. And like the pilgrims I’m here, I’m here for good. I liked the area. The people are so warm there, they’ll back you a hundred percent, you know, you have good to people here. They’ll give it right back to you. You know what I mean And I just love what I do, you know, and my son’s going to be taking it over after I retired down the road, you know, once he learns the business really well.

Speaker 3: And, I’ve, I’ve had a good run here, but like you said, covert was nothing to joke about because I had a going business, a known business. I was well-versed in takeout, which probably saved me from covert. You know, there was non-existence in the dining room, catering non-existence and those are the two things that carried me before. So I lost two components right there. Boom. Yeah. So, but we made ends meet, you know, we had a couple of meetings with the staff and we took the waitresses and we made them drivers or counter people and we focused on takeout doing it, right. Getting it right out, driving, you know, delivery, you know, so that’s what we focused on and it got us through, you know, and now slowly was starting to get back. But this, this is far from over and not just for me, but for all these shop owners, these poor guys who either just opened up a business at the end of it or opening up now, it’s still, we’re not getting hit with the COVID as bad as we were before. And this almost at the end, then that X aspect. But as far as our business, anyways, supplies are had to find prices a skyrocketing on anything you do. I mean, you know, you order less food in the bill is the same as it was when you were ordering three times that, because that’s the price step.

Speaker 2: Yeah. My sister and her husband own a, an ice cream stand up in Maine. And so they were having to put, because last summer they were saying anybody who wanted a cone, it had to go in a cup and then a cone on top. Right. So, whereas before people walked off with a call and they just walked off with a cone. Right. But everybody walked away with a cop. And then of course the supplies became scarce because restaurants that weren’t doing takeout right. Did take out. So there was just a run on all those things. And it’s, it’s people don’t think about that stuff. And I think that’s why these, this is important to us.

Speaker 3: Yeah. It’s, it’s gotten really, really bad and it’s getting worse. I noticed too, like in, in, I use companies that are Italian based, like, you know, product companies and they’re finding it hard, keeping up with product they’re running out of a lot of stock or they’re outrageous, you know what I mean And then there was the other big thing was the help. We, nobody in this business had any help. If you noticed going down the street anywhere, help wanted signs where like, you know, on every corner, because it was, it was bad. People was stealing other, people’s help paying astronomical wages and what’s going to happen to those people is they’re gonna let them go. As soon as they get other people, normal rates, you know, and not this high end, you know, I didn’t know

Speaker 2: That was going on. Yeah.

Speaker 3: Oh yeah. It’s, it’s a lot of good friends of mine who didn’t happen to me, but a lot of other places that I had good friends at work and in this industry, people stole their help from them. Oh yeah. It’s it’s, you know, it’s just people,

Speaker 2: You know, people have families to feed and

Speaker 3: That’s right. Exactly, exactly. Right.

Speaker 2: I suppose. So talk to me about your love of your craft.

Speaker 3: Well, I’ve always believed in one thing, and this was, you know, like an argument with my father, God, rest his soul for years. You know, how, why are you buying this And why are you buying that Because I’m a believer, you start out with something good. You have a good base to start out with. You’re going to make a good product. So I don’t, I don’t, you know, cost is no object to me when I want to get the product to a taste that I like, yeah. I don’t care what it costs to make it, I’m going to make it. And I’m going to be the best at it. We really try that hard with all our foods and our pizza, especially at pizza. Now we want to a, a best in Massachusetts contest at about two or three years ago at Gillette stadium, best in Massachusetts, best

Speaker 2: Pizza in Massachusetts.

Speaker 3: And, I mean, that was, that was a really nice award because you put in the hours, you put in the work, you know, and you help has a lot to do with that too, because you could make, I could make up a hundred recipes if they don’t carry that out and are consistent with it. Right. You’ve done nothing. Right. You know what I mean So it goes a lot to the help I have here. So they’re a good bunch of people, a good core that were Cod, you know, and they make it right. You know So, you know, it’s just using good ingredients and the experience, you learn something every day, especially pizza, you learn something day, every day, I’m still learning and I’m 62 and I’m still learning even as far as when to take the dough out of the refrigerator, when it’s more pliable, when it’s going to give you more air, ear in a pizza is very important to it because you’re going to get that nice fluffy crust. You know what I mean So all these little things come together. Three people could make the same pizza with the same dough in the same sauce and everything else, but it’ll come out three different ways. Know So, you know, you gotta be consistent. That’s what it is.

Speaker 2: Marion’s sure. I mean, you’re just saying all this stuff with this. One of the things that I love about doing what I do is I get to talk to people who are masters at what they, right. And there’s always some nuance or subtlety that the person who just loves your pizza comes in, eats your pizza, has no idea about all those little things that you do to make that pizza tastes the way they

Speaker 3: Exactly right. Which is fascinating to me. Oh yeah. I mean, there’s so many things and I’ve, and I’ve done some crazy things in the past too. Like I’ve, I’ve experimented, you know, and my kid thinks I’m off the wall. Like I even made a pizza dough one day would instead of water use Coca-Cola really. And it gave the pizza such a brown color, Amber color, like because of the sugar content in it. And that gave it a nice taste to, I mean, you, you really didn’t know what it was, but you knew it had a nice taste, but somebody who has diabetes, wouldn’t like, that means like,

Speaker 2: No, but I knew a guy made brownies with Coca-Cola in it. Yeah.

Speaker 3: So there’s a lot of, a lot of things that, you know, go on behind the scenes experiment thing, you know, like if you love your craft, you’ll never stop. And if you say, you know, it all you’re bull out us because you’ll never know it all I learn every day. So every day that’s great. That’s great. That’s, you know,

Speaker 2: What is your favorite pizza to make

Speaker 3: I like the margarita because it’s, it’s simple, simple ingredients. Bazell leaves fresh tomatoes, garlic, you know, and Buffalo mozzarella, you know what I mean And, it’s, it’s just all comes together and a little olive oil, you know what I mean Okay. I mean, there’s, I have the crazy pizzas here. I have the barbecue, bacon, French fry, pizza, chicken, ZD, broccoli, Alfredo.

Speaker 2: I saw the video as I was waiting in the lobby and all like, huh,

Speaker 3: They, they like it. They buy them. But me I’m a traditionalist. I, you know, if you go to a place and they have a good cheese, they have a good pizza. You know, if you like the cheese pizza, then you’ve done something. Right. Because that’s not hiding anything. That’s true.

Speaker 2: That’s yeah. Yeah. I hadn’t thought about it that

Speaker 3: Way, but yeah. And there’s so many different styles of pizza too. Like I like other people’s pizza too. Once in a while, you know, I like a good Greek style pizza, you know, if it’s made right. It’s a nice pizza. Italian pizza was made like Mayan is made on a hot stone, you know, the old school way, which I like to, I also make a Sicilian pizza too, in a pan

Speaker 2: Now, see, this is where I’m learning. So what’s the difference between Greek Italian insistent pizzas. Basically

Speaker 3: Greek is basically a pan pizza, but it’s, it’s a, it’s a softer dough. It’s a crispier though. you know, it’s made with a lot like shortening in it and stuff with the Italian pizzas of very lean dough. It’s, it’s basically good, good olive oil, salt, flour, water, and yeast. You know what I mean And I use fresh sheets. I don’t, everybody likes that dry yeast because it’s easy to store and it fares better and everything, but you buy good fresh sheets. You’ll never go wrong with taste, you know, but Sicilian is almost on the idea of a scaly loaf of bread. It’s the same type of dough, you know, a little sugar added into it, oil again, but it’s a mixture which I can devolve. It’s not all red flour. There’s other flowers mixed into it to give it a softer texture. And then an Italian leaner thin crushed stone.

Speaker 3: But mine is, I learned that from Rhode Island, a guy in Rhode Island who was like probably the biggest sales towards any chain. And he’s a single operator. Wow. I mean, he’s, he’s up there, but they’ve been doing it for a hundred years. So, you know, I learned from him step-by-step, you know, and he makes a good Sicilian, you know, it’s a nice pizza. It’s a little thicker than you. Like, if you like a nice thick pizza, that’s what to buy. And it’s good when you’re having parties or events. It goes well, because you get a full sheet, $24 and it’s, it’s a big, full sheet pan of pizza. So it’s not the

Speaker 2: Square. Yeah.

Speaker 3: It’s rectangle, but it’s actually 24 pieces. Wow. So it’s a good size pizza. You could cut it into like appetizer sizes, which is very popular here on events and stuff I do. Or what Paul Ortiz or events or anything, you know, it just goes, well,

Speaker 2: What’s the most popular pizza that you shouldn’t sell

Speaker 3: I would say the, sausage, I use a real good sausage. Ya. I don’t buy those sausage bits. No, I use the real sweet Italian sausage and I cut up myself and it’s, you know, nice. I’d like to use on my pepperoni, but some people wouldn’t probably go for it. I liked the real Italian margarita pepperoni, which I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it. It comes in a stick. It’s very dry is you’d have to put it on the pizza midway during the cooking, because if you did it at the start, it would just out and like, you know what I mean But the flavor, oh my God, you know, it’s so good. You know what I mean It’s really good. I mean, if somebody requested it, I would do it for them. There you go. Because that’s a phenomenal pepperoni pizza. No,

Speaker 2: That’s my favorite is pepperoni pizza. But at any rate, you’re getting ready to, we, we are here in your dining room right now and you’re getting ready to open up. So is there anything that you want to share with our list

Speaker 3: Well, just that I want to basically thank them for the 26 years. So far that I’ve had here. It’s been a good run so far and I hope it continues. they’ve been really loyal to me. They’re really, really loyal. Even during bad times, they came in and supported us. I mean really nice people. I don’t have any like friends, you know, when I leave here, I go home. They go from work to home. I don’t go anywhere. I got my kids and my wife. I have so many friends here that have met over the years and I consider them friends because they are. And just, I mean, if something’s ever not right here, you know, that you get or whatever, you know, talk to me, call me, I put my cell number on the hotline number every day. If you have any suggestions, tell me, you know what I mean I want to be the best. I don’t want to be good. I want to be the best. There you go. You know And, I just wanna, you know, give it a lot of gratitude out to the, to the customer for a change because they’re, they’re the reason that we’re here still, you know Yeah. So good to me. That’s all. And I appreciate it.

Speaker 2: Yeah. Now one last question and I’ll probably put this in a little bit earlier. You’re working the business. Yup. What time did you get here today

Speaker 3: three 30. Three 30 in the morning. Yeah. Yeah.

Speaker 2: I mean, this is a man who is dedicated to his business and his customers. So I mean, you, you probably got up at two.

Speaker 3: Well, it came to the point where, you know, I didn’t do this all the time. You know, like at three 30, I come in at like five or six, but I’m coming in earlier now because the way I feel is the help is not out there yet. You know Like they haven’t fully come back to work. A lot of people. And the morning prep is such an important position in any restaurant because that guy is going to be able to pump food out the right way, not just pump it out the right way. You know, it’s got to have good flavors and making soups. Like I do all my soups every morning. I do my sauce every morning in big vats. Wow. Sharp cook. All my Pasa, cut all the vegetables, make my orange cheese red might chicken cutlets in all my veal. You know what I mean So all that, if you don’t have somebody good in the morning, good day starts off bad. Well, you come in. Well, the next set of cooks comes in to actually cook. Lunch is not the knives ready. It’s just everything. You know, it just turns your stomach because it’s like, your whole day is behind now. You know Yeah. It was, if I come in, they could blame me.

Speaker 3: I don’t mind taking the blame.

Speaker 2: That’s amazing. So you’ve already put in an eight hour day and, that’s just amazing when you think about it, it doesn’t, you don’t just come in and turn the ovens on foods, ready to rock and roll. It’s

Speaker 3: A lot of people think there’s a magical microwave. Yeah. That just brings up. Oh, I, I wish it was, but it’s not that way,

Speaker 2: You know

Speaker 3: Okay. You know,

A mixture of coyote and Wolf. My guest today is going to explain why that’s, what we’re seeing all around town. My guest today is John Way. He is an expert in coyotes wolves, coy wolves, smart guy knows a lot of stuff. And the reason I had Jon on the show was that I’m seeing all kinds of stuff on social media. And I think nextdoor.com and facebook.com and Instagram from the Quincy police department and other things about coyote sightings around the city. And, I’ve seen them, myself walking my dogs up at Faxon park. I know they’re in the cemetery as well. And so I thought, you know, there’s a lot of folks talking about coyotes and questions about them, and I thought let’s get a pro on their show.

Speaker 1: Well, as I said in the beginning of this episode, my guest today is Dr. John Way, who has his bachelor of science from UMass Amherst, his master of science from the university of Connecticut stores and his doctorate from Boston college. And the reason why I have John on the podcast with me today is that as I’ve said in previous episodes, I have a couple of dogs. I walk around a Quincy with them. We spent a lot of time up at facts in park, and I know there are coyotes in facts and park, but other dog owners talk to me about coyotes. And I saw coyote today, or other people will be talking about that. They saw a coyote running down the street in the neighborhood, and I thought, you know what There’s an awful lot of interest in coyotes. Let’s get someone who’s an expert on coyotes. And so John, through the power of Google, I found you and I found out you’re a fellow UMass grad. And so I said, I want to talk to this guy, how are you today

Speaker 3: I’m great. Thanks. Thanks for having me, John.

Speaker 1: Yeah, it’s great to have you here. It’s a topic that a lot of people that I meet walking my dogs, Zoe and Quinn, around the neighborhood and in facts and park in particular, and also see a lot of talk about it on, are you familiar with the app nextdoor.com

Speaker 3: Yeah. So I’m not engaged in it too much, but I certainly know it. Yes.

Speaker 1: Yeah. So there’s a lot of people talking about coyotes. There’s a mixed bag of conversation. There’s all watch out for coyotes and there’s coyotes. They’re everywhere. They’ve been with us for years. Don’t worry about it. They’re more afraid of you than you are of them. And so I thought let’s get an expert here to talk about coyote behavior, and just anything that you can tell us about coyotes in an urban setting,

Speaker 3: Eastern coyote that we have living here, not just in Quincy, but all of the Northeast from essentially kind of the New Jersey, mid Atlantic area, all the way up into Southern Canada. So that would include all the Northeast, including Maine and New Hampshire is actually technically a coyote Wolf hybrid. the ant the animals about, 60 to 65% coyote, which would be kind of the Western variety of coyote. And then roughly 25, maybe 30% a Wolf. And interestingly, there’s two different wolves native to the Northeast. And this Eastern coyote seems to have both some gray Wolf genes and some Eastern Wolf genes. But the bottom line is it’s about 25 to 30% Wolf, meaning that the genes found in this Eastern coyote about 25 to 30% of it is not found in Western coyotes. Then the other interesting thing is they have about 10% dog DNA and the men we’re not, not really quite sure how dog DNA got into a wild animal because typically a domestic animal doesn’t do too well if it’s back across to the wild, but quite clear, quite clearly, they were able to survive.

Speaker 3: And, now they kind of breed true. So it’s not like we have Western coyotes, wolves and dogs currently breeding. This is what made the animal around a hundred years ago, maybe 70 years ago, as I got to the Northeast. And then we kind of have this animal breeding with each other, but there are certainly a bigger animal. they’re more robust, they’re bigger basically in every direction and every dimension, excuse me than a Western coyote, but they’re also a little bit smaller, not surprisingly than a Wolf. And so where the term coy Wolf comes from. And I just wrote a book and it’s, it’s freely online. If anybody’s interested in it. I have a website, Eastern coyote research.com. And I have a section in the book section on the website called coy Wolf book. And it describes a lot of what we’re talking about here today.

Speaker 3: And I made it as an ebook to make it more accessible than my typical print books. So that’s just kind of a real basic to the animal. A lot of people get confused when they hear the terms, but essentially coy Wolf is a synonym for the Eastern coyote. We have living here in Massachusetts and all of the Northeast for that matter. a lot of people get confused and they say, Hey, we have coyotes around here, but I saw this big animal. Was it a coil And you’re kind of saying the same thing because the animals in Quincy are those hybrids. Most people in the Northeast call them coyotes. But if you look anywhere else in the country, besides the Eastern United States, especially the Northeast, the United States, these animals look a lot different. And that’s because Western counties are a lot smaller. They don’t have the Wolf genes that these Eastern Kyrie or coils have. So the toy Wolf kind of comes directly from that. it doesn’t change what the animal is in what we’re going to talk about, but it does just kind of, it is an important point because I get that question quite frequently in many different areas is, is, is this animal equivalent for they’re all coils here in Massachusetts Most people just call them Eastern coyotes or simply coyotes.

Speaker 1: Yeah, that’s what I do. I say, oh, there’s coyotes.

Speaker 3: Exactly. So it’s good to just know their background because for instance, we used to have cougars here in Massachusetts, believe it or not. Unfortunately I love them. They got killed off and out west they’re most commonly called mountain lions, right in many parts of the world, cause they live all the way down to the Southern tip of Argentina. They’re called Pumas, especially in kind of Spanish speaking areas, Pumas common. And then they’re also called Panthers or Florida Panthers in Florida, but that’s all the same species which are also called cougars or mountain lions. So, you know, it’s really not too surprising that in the animal that has such a range and then this hybrid might be called something else besides just coyote. So Eastern coyote, coy Wolf coyote here in new England, that’s kind of referring to the same creature. So we have

Speaker 1: Koi walls that are, when we see what we call a coyote in Quincy, Massachusetts, it’s really a coy Wolf. Genetically tell us about their typical behavior. And if somebody sees a coyote or a coy Wolf, what do they do What’s their typical behavior Do they hunt at night You hear these things. If you see a skunk or a raccoon during the daytime, you should be concerned because they, that’s not their normal behavior pattern. What’s a typical behavior pattern for a coyote here in the Quincy area.

Speaker 3: First of all, they’re very successful around people. That’s kind of obvious. And a lot of people get confused by that, but where you have natural habitat and then even in suburban areas, those are actually really good habitats. And suburban areas actually is really good. Wildlife habitat. You have a high density of prey. In fact, you generally have more prey animals in some suburbs than you do in wild areas. And it’s not just because of lack of hunting, although that’s part of the reason human hunting that is there’s also, a lot more food for those animals. People don’t think so, but our backyards have all of these plants that are deer height, as opposed to the forests that have, you know, 50 to a hundred foot Oaks. Even though those certainly provide food for deer, no question about it, but especially animals like rabbits and turkeys that do really well with this mixed habitat.

Speaker 3: And so where you have an abundance of prey, you typically have predators that do pretty well too. So we’ve had fishers move into this area. Black bears are moving east by the year when I was at UMass, they were mostly in Western mass, 20 years later. They’re now well-established in central mass and starting to reach Eastern mass as a population, not just as individuals which do get here regularly. Obviously I don’t recommend feeding animals. That’s not a good thing. You want to keep them wild, but even just in our normal habitat structure, without feeding them, we provide a lot of food for these animals in terms of natural habitat. Natural. I kind of have my air quotes out because sometimes natural is humans cutting things down and having vegetation, but basically provide a lot of vegetation for animals like deer rabbits and typical Eastern coyote and other predator foods.

Speaker 3: And so that’s kind of the first setting of the stage is we provide a lot of food for prey. And then of course, if there’s a lot of prey, we provide that food for the predators that might eat them. Of course, like Eastern coyotes. The other thing is Eastern coyotes are super successful around people and it might be for reasons that we don’t think of they’re actually super successful around people because they avoid us. They do well near us, but they also typically avoid us. And people might say, well, I see them all the time. Statistically, they’re really avoiding us. And some of the ways that they avoid us are kind of through questions that you asked me. the first way that they avoid us is even if you see them during the daytime, all the animals I’ve ever studied in the wild are more active at night than they are during the daytime.

Speaker 3: So if you look at, if you look at it, statistically, you might see them during the day and I’m not including animals that get habituated to people. It’s never a good idea to feed wild animals, especially predators that could potentially harm people because then they can, a lot of animals don’t change their behavior, but a lot of animals will change their behavior. I’m talking more about the animals that are behaving naturally feeding on natural prey items. Like I just mentioned, they’re typically active at night and I’ve just found over the years, but it just seems easier for them to be active night, to avoid people. And for instance, go through your neighborhood wherever you live. If it’s urban, suburban drive through your neighborhood or walk through your neighborhood and look at all the front bushes in your neighbor’s yards. Well, those front bushes you might laugh at during the daytime saying that’s not wildlife habitat.

Speaker 3: Who’s going to live there besides maybe a rabbit under there, but at night nighttime, I’ve seen coyotes literally hide behind those bushes as cars drive by. And then when the cars go by, they kind of go right back into the neighborhoods, right back into hunting for usually wild prey. And in the terms of a coyotes mind, a wild prey might include a unleashed cat that’s left outside, especially at nighttime. Cause because they know that how would they know the difference The one thing they do know is cats are typically found near human residences, but I’ve lost some chickens. I used to raise chickens and I’ve lost some to coyotes that I let roam and they never get into my pen. But when I let the chickens free room, it’s kind of like the coyotes know the chickens are near their house, but they know it’s somebody’s pet or just a wild animal that lives only near people’s houses, you know, from their perspective.

Speaker 3: Right So there, there are these animals that do really well in their people because we provide them perfect habitat and they utilize that. They’re typically on these small Woody patches during the daytime, in these urban or highly urban areas, they largely avoid people there. There’s absolutely no question. They’re scared of people. Any animal that you tell me is old. The minute I trap them and put a radio collar on, which gives me the ability to track these animals, they are always just terrified of people. I mean, literally going in the bathroom on themselves, having their, having their ears back cowering, it would be like you or me walking down an alley, I’m in a big gang going by us. Are you going to confront the gang and puff up your jacket Are you going to kind of look the other way and almost pretend that you’re smaller and don’t see me, please.

Speaker 3: Don’t see me. And it’s not figuratively. It’s literally the impression I get when I’ve studied these animals over the years. And then when I track them, it’s very similar. You know, they’re much more bold that night. And I think a lot of that reason is they’re comfortable because most people aren’t active at night and they know where people are active at night and it’s easier for them to avoid people. of course they’re predators. And so they have to travel quite a bit. They can move up to 10, 15 miles a night, which is hard to even fathom until you actually watch them do it in an urban area. And you’re like, holy smokes. Literally a coyote from Quincy could take the railroad tracks into Boston. Certainly south Boston, get some food there. Let’s just say that park in south Boston that used to that’s a golf course now in a park used to be in, it’s pretty close to Quincy. Obviously. Let’s just say that was the open cap dump. I think it used to be years ago, a coyote family could easily take like railroad tracks or some highway into that area of south Boston feed and then be back in the marshes of Quincy the next morning on a regular basis. I mean, that’s how much they travel. I’m not saying there is a packing Quincy doing that cause I haven’t tracked them there. But just to give you a perspective,

Speaker 1: It’s just an example.

Speaker 3: Yeah. So, so they move quite a bit, but largely they’re avoiding people, but in the same sense to kind of contradict myself a little bit because they’re, they’re an animal of contradictions. They also have to be seen because of the way they move. So even though they’re largely avoiding people because of this movement and because of their food requirements of a predator, they are often seen as they’re traveling, especially where people aren’t bothering them, they might be more active to travel in the early morning or later evening when it’s still light out when people are still active, even though they’re mostly avoiding people, but they’re mil for the most part is to kind of fulfill their, requirements, their biological requirements while, while avoiding people as best they can. And I mean, the numbers are kind of proved by the statistics. You know, if, if one or two coyotes bites people a year, like what happened in Arlington and on Cape Cod Provincetown this summer where there were two separate bites and in each place, that is an extremely abnormal event.

Speaker 3: And meanwhile, nationwide, a couple dozen people are killed by our, our beloved dogs every year, a thousand people per day go to the emergency room from dog bites. So not just a scratch that, you know, oh, I’ll just, you know, put a bandaid on it. But something that requires an emergency room visit a thousand people per day, just in the United States go to the emergency room from dog bites and somebody might say, oh yeah, there’s a lot more dogs and coyotes, but coyotes essentially live in every community in north America, at least that the United States besides Hawaii. So, and I venture to say that if you have a bike, you could, if you don’t live, if you live in a high-rise in Manhattan or something on a bike ride, you could get within Audi range, within an hour or two, that’s how many calories there are. Even if there might not be as many cavities as there are dogs that he’s lived throughout, pretty much most of the human populated north America except Northern Canada and Northern Alaska. So it’s an interesting and very successful animal. And it’s become even more interested in the Northeast when you get this bigger kind of hybrid animal. But, but essentially they’re doing the same thing regardless of that hybrid background.

Speaker 1: Interesting. Yeah. I have, honeybee hives in my yard. And so I had a game camera set up in my yard just to watch them at night. All of a sudden this thing comes along, trot through the yard at night and I’m thinking it’s not a Fox. What is that And it’s got this big, long bushy tail. And I’m thinking, I think that’s, that’s bigger than a Fox. And then it’s like, there’s gotta be a coyote. And then right down the middle of the street, I saw this guy and my dogs went nuts. They, their noses went up in the air and they just started barking inside the house. And I looked and there’s this coyote running down the middle of the not running, but kind of like that little bouncy trot that they have. And then one morning it was, I don’t know it was up, it was after sunrise, but the sun certainly wasn’t high in the sky, but, we’re walking through Faxon and I see this thin coyote just trot across this open parking area, it looked over and it was like, yeah, I know I’m going this way.

Speaker 1: And it just, just moved on into the woods. But then I hear people talking about, well, we were walking down this path and then this coyote appeared and we started to make a lot of noise and stuff like that. You explained that the, the incidents of human interaction with coyotes and actually getting harmed by one is extremely low. But if somebody were to come across a coyote with their dog or something like that, are there any behaviors that people should take or any precautions that people should take or just make a lot of noise and it’ll probably run away or they probably see you long before you see them and they’re just not interested.

Speaker 3: Yeah. It’s a great question. And you, you almost kind of sit the couple of the sessions. I’m going to say you kind of suggested there. first of all, they certainly you, most of the time, not always, certainly, but, but most of the time they kind of know you’re coming. Most people, including kids are pretty loud and they don’t even know what half the time. And, and usually they can smell people most of the time ahead of time. So certainly coming across one in making noise doesn’t hurt. and it’s, it’s a good idea. In fact, one of the biggest suggestions out west, cause I visit Yellowstone. I’ve written quite a few books on my trips to Yellowstone national park, one of my favorite areas in the world. And, I always carry bear spray, which is essentially a high form of, of pepper spray or mace that I carry when I hike out there and, and really kind of applies.

Speaker 3: It applies to coyotes too. The more noise you make, if you’re scared of them or nervous of them, the, the better it can be. I’ve had some scenarios on Cape Cod where I’ve had animals bedded down, especially in the summertime, the summertime, it gets dark so late that I can almost just tell the animals are getting itchy, to get up and get going. They often just kind of wait for it to get to that dust corpuscular time, which you know, in June and July isn’t until 8 15, 8 30. Yeah. And I’ve had a few, I’ve had a few scenarios where, and I mean this literally where I’ve almost had to knock on people’s doors to tell them what I’m doing. So they don’t call the police where there’s kids jumping on trampolines. And I have the animals signal off the wall. Like the flipping thing is under the trampoline and it’s really, it’s 50 yards away, probably in this patch of woods.

Speaker 3: And it’s very predictable. The animal doesn’t do much movement. I, I w I go find another animal. I come back right before dark and sure enough, right at dark, they get up and leave. And of course that’s when most kids, especially, or people in general are generally going inside because, you know, you’re losing light. It’s hard to see. And the animal gets active. And even if the kids were still on the trampoline, they probably would still get active around them. And they would just go out kind of the back way of the woods that they came. But I’ve had variations of that, just dozens and dozens of times of animals being right near human activity in these small patches of wood. Usually these small patches of wood are really thick, like a lot of briars or marshy like habitats that clearly people don’t go in and the coyotes can smell that the people don’t go into even these, like maybe one acre, really small process of land that even a urban place like Quincy has plenty of those areas remaining remaining, and they get active.

Speaker 3: So clearly, you know, most galleries are doing that and avoiding people and doing what you kind of, how you described it, you know, they’re out and about, but you come along and they just go the other way and where people aren’t killing them in urban areas, they kind of disregard us as another object and they’re not going to get more dangerous. They just aren’t as willing to use so much energy to run away from us. It might be equivalent out in Yellowstone where there’s lots of bison and bison weigh 2000 pounds, at least the males do, and they can harm humans and even predators pretty easily. Cause they’re just such big, massive animals. And I’ve seen many instances, not just coyotes, but large gray wolves, some of the largest wolves in north America in that Yellowstone area, because of all the food that they eat in the wild.

Speaker 3: And when a bison comes along, they do pram bison, but usually the ones that they can actually bring down, but healthy bison will literally just ignore wolves and wolves will be traveling in a, in a line and they’ll come across bison or bison herd. And just like you or me hiking on a trail, they have to essentially go off the trail to get around the bison. And then they get back on the trail to continue on their path. And they’re, they’re largely avoiding them. And I think that’s what coyotes often do, especially at nighttime with people in cars is, you know, they know that there’s lots of humans where they live and they’re kind of avoiding us, but also trying not to alter their lives too much so they can meet their biological needs. So, so making noise and, and, you know, being aware and if you carry things like air horns, even sticks and rocks to just kind of throw at animals that might get near, that can make a big difference.

Speaker 3: That’s with people. When you add dogs to the mic mix, especially when you’re walking dogs at night, they can get aroused in different regards to dogs. First of all, dogs and coyotes are just natural competitors, just like out west wolves and coyotes are wolves kill coyotes that try to eat their food. The coyotes kind of just naturally see, you know, a close relative like the dog as competition in something that they generally don’t like. I do hear reports of Katie’s playing with dogs and stuff. And I think that has to do with young coyotes that are kind of on their own. They’ve either left their family or are in their parents’ territory. And they’re just kind of on their own. That’s what I typically think of. But I think when you hear of coyotes playing with dogs or vice versa dogs playing with Kylie’s, you’re probably talking about younger coyotes that are willing to do that because most older coyotes are guarding territories and they don’t want, they don’t want non coyotes or non dogs in their territory.

Speaker 3: So one of the most important things to do with dogs, and I know it’s a leash law, obviously in a place like Quincy, especially, but leashing dogs can be one of the most important things you do with them. Leashing dogs just literally prevents that interaction from happening unless coyotes physically come, you know, within whatever five feet of you, which is just extraordinary, extraordinary, rare. So obviously we’re not worrying about that on a daily basis. And I think putting coyotes in perspective, they are a predator living near us, but just like we can get into, you know, bad things happening to us with other humans or, or cars while we drive. it’s, it’s just really, really rare obviously for those events to happen, same thing with coyotes, doing something negative towards us. But with dogs, I do have this instant kind of arousal. And even though they generally avoid dogs and I’ve recorded many instances where they often avoid dogs, they often, you know, have confrontations with them as well.

Speaker 3: And especially at nighttime, when people are walking dogs at night, you know, coyotes are much more bold for all the reasons we just talked about. Mainly because most people are inactive and they’ll come into neighborhoods though travel and, you know, human dominated areas more than they will during the daytime. And just keeping dog’s leash is really important. In the later part of the summertime unleashed dogs, near coyote sites where coyotes raised their pups can often be fiercely defended. I’ve seen coyotes, mostly avoid people for most of the year. And then in the, in the late summer, June has been, especially July and August when coyote pups are more active, I’ve seen coyotes aggressively confront dogs. And almost every time it’s been in a place like a golf course or a cranberry bog here on Cape Cod where, dogs are unleashed because people are walking them and coyotes immediately confront them.

Speaker 3: And then, you know, obviously there might be some type of negative interaction there, whether it’s an attack or just a, just a confrontation. And sometimes that even happens with dogs being leashed, where the people say, gosh, these two or three Kyries confronted me. I turned around and I say, let me guess what happened You had your dog leash, you were doing everything right. And the coyotes followed me and it was really unnerving, but then all of a sudden the Cody’s just stopped and turned back around. and I continued on my way and I say, it may say, yes, that’s exactly what happened. And I say, well, there’s no question in my mind that you were at, what’s called a rendezvous site, rendezvous sites or above ground den sites that the pups use when they’re not using dens anymore. They only use dens for the first couple months of life.

Speaker 3: So about the age where you might bring a dog puppy home from a breeder, they’re pretty, they’re pretty much not sleeping in Benz anymore. They’re sleeping above ground. And the parents in the offspring of the parents that are helping ruins and pups get pretty protective of them. And so very often they’ll turn back around, walk back to that rendezvous site where the pups are like nothing ever happened. And the people are like, what just happened And that’s exactly what happened. They were kind of escorting the dog or dogs away, even with the people nearby, you know,

Speaker 1: Trusting you tell me this story because I had a neighbor come to me saying he was going to call me because he was, he walked his dogs at night. I live near a park and he said that all of a sudden these coyotes came and they followed them all the way back to his house. Interesting. And he knows that I have a couple of dogs. This is, I got to call John, but he saw me the next day. And he told me all about it. And I said, geez, that’s kind of scary. I mean, you know, they follow you back to your house, but what you’re saying is that there’s a likelihood that maybe that park or someplace close to that park, might’ve been what you call a rendezvous site,

Speaker 3: certainly possible. You know, obviously I’m not going to have a specific zone on all that, but, there’s a, there’s a good chance. and then there’s also kind of something that happens in the, in the mid-winter they breed around roughly mid January to maybe early February. That’s when they breed. And then, a little over two months later, they have good birth of course, in the spring, which would be usually late March, early April is when the birth around here then. So during their breeding season, they also seem to get a lot more territorial where the males are sticking with the females, not letting other males into their territory. And some of the pups are now almost one year old. And usually a coyote pack is about three or four animals, which would be a couple of pups that stick around to become young adults with their parents.

Speaker 3: and they’re traveling these territories. And that’s the other time of the year where you often hear about dog confrontations. Is there just a little bit more kind of aggressive towards other canines And, you know, usually that’s other coyotes, but obviously dogs kind of fit into that mix. And, they just seem to be kind of, you know, something seems to kind of set them off sometimes. And especially at night, they kind of keep their eye and they just want those animals away. And if you have a more German shepherd type looking animal, you obviously have this animal that might look a little bit more wild than another breed of dog. and it just seems like, especially when the dogs leash that they do that, but there’s usually not an actual confrontation, which is definitely unnerving. I, I certainly feel for the person, especially not knowing what’s going on.

Speaker 3: but usually usually that noise being made and the dogs being leashed usually prevent those interactions. But, but I do agree walking an animal escorting you right back to your house is a little bit extreme. I would think that not knowing the area that you know, once get into the neighborhood and you leave that park, the animals would feel more secure and then turn back around and go do what they’re doing. So to follow them that far it’s certainly I would agree is, is, is unusual in, in a little bit beyond. And, you know, I would recommend yelling, making noise and doing that even while you’re walking dogs, just so they certainly know it’s gone because there’s no question they key in, on dogs during a lot of this. And it’s very rare, at least I haven’t heard of too often for these animals to actually follow up people without dogs.

Speaker 3: And then unfortunately, when that happens, there’s almost no question people in the area are feeding them. And that’s that, that seems to be obviously what’s occurring in almost all these attacks we’re hearing about. And certainly in the province town one, the Cape Cod national seashore Rangers had to put down a coyote that went after a little kid and people were feeding them. And I don’t have any personal experience with that recently, but people were from what I hear were clearly feeding Cody’s in that area. And most of the time, even when you feed them and do everything wrong, they stay pretty wary around people, but obviously not every single one does that. And certain animals become used to that. And then they become reliant on people in aggressive towards people and not, not feeding them in the first place is important out west. The motto is a fed bear is a dead bear because once you start feeding bears, they start keying in on that. And with coyotes, you can almost kind of say the same thing

Speaker 1: Occurred to me while you were saying that, what about trash night Some evenings people will put their trash cans out the afternoon before. And it’s always a challenge cause I have a couple of dogs that have a good chunk of hound in them. And so they sniff everything anyway, but on trash night, it’s even more of a challenge. And I’m wondering if the same thing holds true for coyotes that, oh yeah, it’s Wednesday night in Quincy. So let’s go troll around for like, you know, the Buffalo wing bones that somebody throughout they scavengers like that, or are they looking for live prey and, and taking care of it that way

Speaker 3: I think that in a place like Quincy trash night would be more affected by, raccoons maybe, and then possibly by coyotes raccoons, I think certainly would key on that, but they also certainly would probably know that it probably is the best thing in the long run for, for avoiding confrontations in, in garbage, everywhere with animals would be to bring food, bring trash out, excuse me at, at, in the morning after, you know, right before they come. So that’s probably the best thing to ultimately do is to just bring your trash outside in the morning. I don’t think they go into dumpsters as much as an animal like raccoon would. I don’t think they typically do it because one of the impediments is they’re not going to really be able to open up garbage cans, like a raccoon, you know, the raccoons have these pliable hands like you and I do. Yeah. Dexterous. Exactly. So, so while they might do it, I would think other animals like raccoons and maybe even possums might do it a little bit more,

Speaker 1: A really cool experience that you’ve had in your research.

Speaker 3: Yeah. you know, it’s bittersweet as, as I talked to you about this because I did research for a number of years and just with all my findings in publishing, I, I came, a ride to mass wildlife, mass, Massachusetts fish, and wildlife for the people that give you permits to do the research. And so for the past 10 plus years, I actually have not been doing research, which involves trapping, putting radio collars on and then track tracking them in the wild coming up with essentially all the findings that you and I have talked about here today. so it’s, it’s bittersweet because while the same agency allows people to kill them at will for six months a year with a hunting license, I’ve been repeatedly obstructed for my work. So it’s real frustrating. Cause when, when I tell you these stories, I just have to reinforce before I tell you some of the anecdotes that you want to hear, that you need permits to do all this.

Speaker 3: And even with a PhD degree in affiliation with university researchers, wildlife agencies are really often special interest based and nationwide. They have a real bias against predators and it it’s real frustrating. and so I’ll kind of leave it at that if they want to learn more and might be angered, why I’m not actively doing research, they can go into my coil book. And to say that I provide a timeline of exactly what happened would be an understatement. And one of the, one of the first carnival researchers that has been obstructed that has actually spoken out and kind of explain the research obstruction, it’s kind of like, you know, the, the church and the state stuff and scandals that you read about in those, I’m kind of one of the first researchers coming out. So a lot of people don’t know how to help me because wildlife agencies have such power over our collective wildlife resource.

Speaker 3: And the first part of my book coils talks about the animals. So if you want to learn about coy wolves and why they’re called coils and how they behave in the wild, it’s a lot of what you and I have discussed in kind of pictorial detail. the second part is more about the politics associated with wildlife management and how and why a lot of things are unjust. So I, I just wanted to point that out because, not to kind of just toot my own horn of what’s happened to me cause it’s real disappointing to not be actively doing my work, but to answer, answer all of your questions, I need to go through this permitting process that even when I got permits again from universities, they still denied me for really fraudulent reasons. But, some of the work I’ve had has been fascinating because I’m from the town of Barnstable where I’ve done most of my work here on Cape Cod.

Speaker 3: in, in, in the politics aside I’ve, I’ve, I’ve seen some really cool things. I also had a companion site on the north side of Boston. I work with a teacher, Dave from Revere high school who was actually still at Rivera high school. And so we did a pilot project in a companion study in the Revere area, which would include Everett Malden, Melrose in, in those towns and cities around him, including Revere. but most of my work took place in the town of Barnstable where I’m from. So it was really amazing to do this work and hopefully I will be doing this work eventually again, kind of amazing do the work where you grew up and find some of the things that I’ve found in some of the coolest things I’ve found was that animal that used to sleep near trampolines, lived in Austin Ville and he and his pack would take the Osterville Drawbridge across, to get to the mainland of Austin, which means that the people on oyster harbors, which is one of the richest places on Cape Cod richest, places in the country that, you know, that have multi-million dollar houses, it’s this private island and the people on this private island used to think that six or seven counties lived on that private island.

Speaker 3: And the minute I had them radio collared, I realized that that was about 20% of their territory and they were leaving the private island every night, or coming back to the private, private island most nights as well, not every single night, but most nights, and going back and forth between the mainland of Osterville to that essentially that island that, that, that Drawbridge island. And it was amazing to look at how these animals would cross the road. They would literally, obviously the drive Ridge would have to be down to begin with. So it’d be like a road, a road that we could drop drive over, but I became so used to their patterns that I would just drive to this bridge once I got a good location of where they were beforehand. And then I would just wait and sure enough, the radio signals would get really loud, no matter what direction they were coming.

Speaker 3: And it was just amazing to see three or four animals often at night, sometimes one or two, but three or four animals traveling over this bridge and then go down the bridge. And I knew exactly where in the bridge they would go on and off to not be on the road for a super long period of time. Oh, fascinating. Yeah. Those were pretty amazing. But let me just give the listener one final thing if I may, is that a cure Yeah, of course. Yeah. One of the things that was, was super impressive was just how much they moved that night and knowing where I was exactly. Cause I grew up in this town, I ran track and cross country. So I, I, you know, I appreciate having to run that far. It was just how much they would move. Like for instance, they’d be deep in Hyannis at calmness beach one day, one moment.

Speaker 3: And then two hours later they’d be leaving Hyannisport and they’d be in Centerville by Kragle beach, which is one of the most popular beaches on Cape Cod where lots of tourists go to in the summertime, they’d be traveling on the beach on Craigo beach, but then they take a detour and they get kind of into the suburbs. And let’s just say, I gave up tracking them at one in the morning. I wake up the next morning at five or six to try to get them, you know, as they’re finishing up their daily movement. And all of a sudden I have them in a completely different part of central, like maybe up by burger king, which is at exit six on the mid-cap highway. And if you are like from the area and you think of starting a comma speech going to Craig will beach, then moving through a lot of those neighborhoods of Centerville and ending up somewhere near exit six, you’re just going to be like, there’s no way an animal did that regularly.

Speaker 3: They would do that on a nightly basis. So that’s pretty amazing. And, you know, to get an impression of that on a daily basis with all the animals was really amazing. And then being able to watch them in the summertime at their rendezvous sites, when they chose choose these open golf courses or cranberry bogs, it was also really special because I got to see them up close, not at night moving, but during the daytime. And when I say the daytime, usually Dawn or dusk, you know, five to seven in the morning and maybe seven to nine at night before it gets dark out. Those were also really neat experiences that, you know, hopefully I can do again, but these rendezvous sites where they raise their pups and the pups learn to, kinda transitioned to being an independent adolescent Cody on their own where some of the unique things, but regular things that you might see if you have animals, radio collar that you, you know, just would be fortunate to see at the right time of the year, which would be the later part of the summer, the early part of the fall, which would be kind of ending right around now.

Speaker 3: But yeah, late September. Cause once you get to October, they start traveling more, even the pups do. And usually by the later part of the fall, assuming that the pups survive, some of them eventually leave and disperse from their parents, whereas a couple might stick around and form that pack, which would average about three or four can be bigger, but three or four seems to be the average kind of pack size. Once when the pups decide to leave before the new pups are born, then the following spring,

I have every, all my peer reviewed research is in there that verifies the science that you and I talked about or the other stuff like unfortunate. The politics in has happened to my at least research career at the present time.
